My 1st program

I went to ENT for appointment this morning. I brought my both black & pink sound processors with me to audiologist. She put hook it on the computer and increased the map. I picked the sound to be loud and comfortable. I felt so satisfy. I can hear her soft voice. My husband fall sleep and snore. I heard his snore. We were laugh at him! He said, “I went to work at second shift and get off late and didn’t sleep enough.” My audiologist focuses on my sound. I heard my honey’s snore. LOL! I am doing well with my CI since last week. My audiologist likes my attitude with smile. I finished with appointment and left ENT. I heard the automatic door outside front of ENT. I heard the large truck passed on the road. I heard my husband’s coughing as well. He found playlist to hear the music on his ipod in the car. I heard the music and closed my eyes. My hands were clapping and can hear the rhythms. It made my husband cried and happy!!!

We came home. He used the PC and macbook for his homework. I was playing with my laptop and listen on ipod. Then I walked the kitchen and open the scrapbook. My hand grabs and pages the paper. I heard the background and saw my dog’s barking at the door. I told her stop it. She couldn’t stop bark. I told her SHUT UP! LoL My honey called me “Jessica” to get my attention. He talked to me about something with scrapbook and computer. He got ready for go work and drops me off at my mom’s house.

I heard my mom’s voice is loud. I turned my CI’s volume to low. It was sensitive sound. She was doing dishes in the kitchen. I heard something in background and ask my mom what is that? She thought it was my dog’s barking but not. She said, “How about the big dogs bark outside?” I said oh yeah! I walked to the door and saw the dogs bark together on the corner of fence. Then I heard the timer on oven.

I ate salad with a glass plate. I heard the sound of plates moving on the counter. My mom said it was a scooting sound.

I heard the sound of my chewing food.

I heard crunching when I ate croutons.

I heard a smacking noise from my lips as I drank my green tea.

I heard the sound of the Samaritan Helicopter idling. It’s engine on top of Hospital. That’s a long way from here and I heard it! Also I heard airplane’s sound. I was so THRILLED!!! It was my first time to hear much sound that I never heard.

I heard the page of this pad. I came to outside and heard the bird’s whistles. It was amazing!!!! I got home and took my CI off for rest. I was doing with blog. I was so joy the sounds!!!!

3 to 7 days

I was doing laundry. I woke my honey up from late in the afternoon. I took off my CI and hearing aid for a moment. The washer and spinning were LOUD! My husband’s wishing to have HE washer/dryer with silent sound. I grabbed the Aleve for headache relieve. When the pain is goes away. I put CI on. I felt so much better.

I made chicken & artichoke pizza for dinner. I heard many noise with metal stuff. It was pizza sheet’s sound on the counter and adds the topping on it. I put the pizza in the oven and heard the rack in oven. After I took it out of oven and does pizza’s slice cut with sound. It was interesting.

4 days

I heard something and asked Chris what is that? He said, “It was AC vents.” I was saying ohm. We went to Firefly Coffeehouse for his study. I was playing with my laptop and listen music on ipod. I heard people chattering. We came home. He got ready for go work. I was listens the music on ipod. I did with iron for Chris’ uniform. I made a creamy chicken and artichoke soup. The artichoke is my favorite!

5 days, my husband left out of town in early morning. He sent me blackberry instant messenger to let me know. He wanted me to put CI on before storm and rain come. I got up at 9:15. I missed to hear the storm and rain. It was passed. Darn it! I am looking forward to hear rain’s sound again this week. My dog started to howl real LOUD! It drove me crazy! LOL I forget my moleskin left at my mom’s house. I sent a text message to her. To remind her bring the moleskin to her work. I need to replace the new moleskin. I went to mall and meet my mom’s work. I rode on the bus to mall. I heard the noise. I stopped by my mom’s work to see what is up. Her co-workers are happy for me to hear with CI. My hair was down the time. I walked around the mall until my mom got off work. She drove and drops me off at home. I let my dog out pee. I wanted to listen the ipod while I making man’s bracelet with macramé.

My honey came home from work and saw my dance with ipod. He was big smile and crying. We went to mall. I bought a new pink purse to fix for my laptop and stuff. We walked around the mall. We went to his friend’s house for a little while. I took my hearing aid off from my right ear. Because my right brain was headache and my left brain with ci isn’t headache. It was an opposite.

6 days, my honey and I went to his friend’s house for visit. I met a new friend of my honey’s friend from high school. She played on her bass guitar. I was enjoying the sound of bass guitar. She is nice lady! I was so tired and go home.

7 days later, I turned my CI on P3 in silent room. I heard my dog’s chewing with her greenie. I held the greenie and let her chewing. It was interesting.

After Activate – 2 days

I heard the traffic on the road from my apt. My dog was barking. I told my honey to go ENT and pick the recharge batter up from ENT. I stopped at ENT and pick the stuff up. The audiologist asked me, “How is your implant’s feeling?” I said my coil magnet is fine expect my controller BTE (Sound Processor) is heavy and hurt behind on my ear with sore skin scar. She offered me to use moleskin to help me not hurt the skin. My honey and I come to my mom’s house for late lunch. After that, my mom left home to go insurance company. My honey left to work. I walked to drug store and buy a battery for my flip video and moleskin with 3 sheets. I returned to my mom’s house. I cut the moleskin to make a shape and put behind on my ear.

I heard the typing on my keyboard. I heard something loud in background. It was sensitive of garbage disposal. My mom put food into disposal. I hate the sound! My mom stepped on the stool and put plates & glasses cup in the cabinet & shut down the door. She tapped on counter to get my attention. I was startle when I hear the tap. I hate it! She was playing with me if I can hear her. I told her to call my name instead tap. It made me nervous when I heard tap. I heard the kettle’s whistle and boiling. I came home and took my CI off for rest on my ear.

Activation (7/7/09)

I went to ENT for my activation.   I was so excited and anxious.   At first thing my audiologist put the sound processor on my left ear to see if the electrode array was working.    It worked fine.  I can feel the nerves in the left side of my face.  I signaled with my hand to show that I could hear and feel it.  Then the audiologist turned on sound, but was soft.  I felt dizzy from the sensations in my eyes and all around my head. It Startled me and I laughed, but It means that the implant is working fine.  This is my very first experience with that much sound.    I didn’t cry when it was too loud, but the audiologist started it again more softly and gradually increased the sound after that.  I heard the audiologist’s voice, then my husband’s voice.  My mom’s voice and my mother in the law’s voice came after that, and they were both crying.  They were all so happy.  I stayed there at the audiologist for 2 half hours.  When I left ENT and went  outside, I heard the wind moving the trees, and it made so much noise.  I can hear people when they are chat in on about things.   This is my first experience with sound.  When my husband started the car engine I could feel the vibration,  was able to hear it for the first time..

He turned on the Ipod for me to listen.  My first song was “Building A Mystery” by Sarah McLachlan the acoustic version and the second was “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White T’s.  My Third was “A 1000 Miles” the acoustic version by Vanessa Carlton.  And the last was “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.  It all was interesting!

The most annoying sounds are the toilet flush, a coffee grinder, and frappuccino blender at Starbucks.  My skin is still sensitive behind my ear from the surgery.   My Cochlear Implant processor is heavier than my previous hearing aid.

I visited my uncle and aunt for a little while.  My uncle played with a guitar for a couple of minutes, which I enjoyed quite nicely.  I played the piano and felt the sound.  I heard my dog’s bark for the first time and it is real loud.  She growled at the other dogs to.  Both my uncle and aunt are happy for me to hear sounds.  After I left their house I went to my sister in law’s apt briefly.    She was so excited for me.   She loves the cochlear implant look, and thinks it looks cool!  When she said “WOW!,” I could hear her beautiful voice.  Her good friend that was there loves my CI too.  Then we went to our friends’ house to show them my cochlear implant too.  I could hear their children’s voices.  I turned my head to look one of children crying when they fell on the floor sound, and it sounded like a thud.  The awesome sound was when I heard the cats purring.  My friend’s brother came to visit and saw my cochlear implant.   He too said, “I am happy for you” but I could understand through reading his lips.  I said “thank you.” And He said, “You’re welcome.”   And I understand him.  When I told my husband Chris that I can understand through lip reading, he was excited.

My husband and I went home and opened the box from the Cochlear Implant company.   I loved it!   I was so excited.  I would love to show off my cochlear implant and all the accessories.  The cochlear technology is so cool!   My impression of the Nucleus Freedom is good.   The Technician forgot my batteries and charger when I left ENT.   We will just have to pick it up tomorrow.

When my husband got accessories cord for the TV into the CI Processor, I was impressed with the long cord.  Plus it had volume on the cord, it was so great.     I heard people on the TV speaking.   I tried to lip-read from when people were speak.  My husband explained to me, how to listen and focus on the different voices.   I heard it’s different and was not the same.     Chris has a bad habit of tapping on the chair to get my attention and it startled me.   I told him I didn’t like that.  I was overwhelmed.  He was laughing.  I told him to call my name Jessica instead tap on me.     He gave me 6 different choices for a name he can call me.  Jessica, Jessie, Jessy, Jess, Sweetie and Honey.  I want him to repeat them so I could hear them a couple of times.  He said Je-ss-ica 3 times.  He said Je-ss-ie, Je-ss.  I was surprised.  But I was tired and had a long day!   And I had a great time.

Early Life

I was born with Ushers Syndrome – a rare genetic disorder involving a profound loss of hearing, balance and vision problems.  I was diagnosed with the hearing loss at 18 months old.   I started wearing hearing aids by 2 years old and started going to school soon after that.

By age 3 I was miserable because I could not communicate.  My dad and mom talked to my teacher and they decided I needed sign language.   I learned very quickly to communicate with SEE “Sign Exact English”.   I attended to Pre-School for hearing impaired.

I started to learn ASL at age 10 half years old at deaf school.    I learned very quickly to communicate with ASL.  After my dad died of cancer until 5 months before I was diagnosed at 15 half years old with Retinitis Pigmentosa and that also meant Usher’s Syndrome.    I will not able to drive.  I became angry and depress.  My dad never know that I have it.

I will update my story about Usher’s Syndrome when I was in deaf school.   It was the worse memories ever I had.  The post is coming soon.

HealedIt was last June 23.  I am sorry to update a post little late.

I went to the doctor today.  The nurse pulled the staples out from behind my ear.   It only hurt a little.  My skin felt stretched and back to normal, flat.   It felt like a bee sting.   My doctor checked my incision and made sure it was not infected.   He touched the implant inside my head to if it hurts or not.  I felt nothing except my ear is still sore in a circle around my ear.  He said everything is fine and is normal.  He asked me if I can speak a little?  I said yeah.   I told him I can’t wait to hear my voice that I have never heard before.   He saw that I am not afraid of activation and am really excited.   He smiled.    I stayed there for 30 minutes.
I went to get my glasses repaired.  My glasses were broke when I took the arm off because of my surgery.  The lady repaired and put a new nut and bolt in.  It’s hurts behind my ear, because of the cut.   I tried to figure it out to solve the problem.   I am thinking about putting foam on to make it more comfortable.  I am so happy.  I will be able to take a showers again!

Another in a moment

Every time I grab a Kleenex and blow my nose it makes my ear pop.  It hurt so bad.  And when I clear my throat it causes my ear to pop.   I can’t wait until that goes away.

I’m still wearing my glasses with no left arm still, because of the 6 staples behind my ear.   I tried on a pair of sunglasses and the arm on those glasses hurt.    It’s not comfortable and doesn’t fit.   I can’t wait until next week on Tuesday for my Post-Operative to get staples off.   I am tired of my glasses with one arm I look like I am poor and can’t afford new glasses.  LoL

I miss wearing my sunglasses!  😦  I am not able to wear them until next week.  I wish it would hurry up!  Sunglasses are very important for me!

I stopped taking my painkiller medicine for the serve pain.   I am taking Aleve to relieve the swelling which helps the pain.  The painkiller is a controlled substance and can cause me to addicted easy.   I don’t need to go take nap all the time and be dizzy again.    I am back to normal again.

I am able to cook and do dishes again.   I will go outside somewhere sometime today.   My mom wanted me to check on her dogs while she is out of town.    But, I have to take it easy.   I need to relax more, and work on my blogging and get working again on my crafts.  I am curious how working on making jewelry and hearing music in the background will be like.

Got mail from ENT clinican

My husband opened my mail without my permission.  I slapped his head.   It’s my mail!  LoL   Anyways,  I read the user manual and warning about cochlear implant.   I looked at my activation schedule is on July 21, 2009.  I was puzzled and confused.  I thought the first clinician sent me an email for cochlear implant appointment is on July 7th.    My husband called to ENT to see what is going on.  He checked the DVD.   It was not working on our TV, laptop and computer.  Because it’s PAL outside of US.   I have to throw it away.  I need get another DVD for in USA only.

My first clinican said my activation schedule is still on July 7th.  She said apology to confuse me.   Someone must be mistake the schedule.     I don’t want to wait so long away!   I am pretty excited!

Thoughts at this moment

I was in bed, when my left ear started ringing repeatedly.  I told my husband that I heard the ringing.  He said, “The nerves inside the cochlea causes tinnitus.”  It mean my brain nerves working.   That’s interesting!  I found some info stating that it is normal for all CI patients to have a risk for developing tinnitus.

I got up from bed, and really wanted to wash my hair so bad.   I am tired of it being oily and gross.   My hair hasn’t been washed since the morning of the operation.   I found a CI blog that gave me the idea to use a cotton ball to cover the incision behind my ear and Press “n” Seal wrap over to of the ear.    I was super careful to wash my hair and not let alot water touch my incision. I washed my hair in the tub to avoid water getting on my left ear.  I massaged the shampoo to get rid of the oil, and the dandruff on my scalp.  Then towel covered my hair to dry.  Finally I grabbed my hair dryer and was real careful not to use heat near the incision.  I felt so much better now that my hair is clean!
